HUSAR Courses and Workshops

Content:
  1. HUSAR practical introductory course
  2. HUSAR advanced bioinformatics workshop

In our practical introductory courses and advanced bioinformatics workshops we demonstrate to our users the optimal use of the HUSAR tools and databases.
  • Participation is free for registered users (prices for unregistered users are on request).
  • Workshops last two days from 9 am to 5 pm.
  • Workshops are held in room 884 at the main building of DKFZ.
  • Workshops can be held in German or English.
  • The number of participants is limited to 8.
  • Computer terminals are available for practical training.
Please arrange your own transportation and accommodation.
For registration or more information send us an email or give us a call under phone number 06221-42-2349 or -2337. Under certain conditions courses can also be held on location. Please contact us for further arrangements.

Practical Introductory Course

The practical introductory course consists of several practical training sessions and presents a thorough introduction to the HUSAR tools and databases. These courses are intended for novice users of HUSAR or scientists who want to refresh their knowledge of bioinformatics. We strongly advice new users to attend, since this will enable a much faster understanding of the HUSAR tools. As a service to our participants, the exercises of the practical training sessions are now online.

Topics:

  • W2H, the interactive WWW interface to HUSAR.
  • An introduction to the command line interface to HUSAR (including UNIX, FTP).
  • An overview of other tools offered by us:
    - The Sequence Retrieval System SRS
    - EST-Clustering
    - The Bioccelerator (fast database searches)

Advanced Bioinformatics Workshop

The aim of the advanced bioinformatics workshops is to bring you up to date on the different fields and latest developments in Bioinformatics. The advanced workshops discuss important programs as well as their underlying algorithms and include practical training sessions. These workshops are intended for scientists who already have experience in using bioinformatics software and would like to expand their knowledge. Novice HUSAR users should first attend the practical introductory course. As a service to our participants, the slides that are shown during the presentations, are available at our documentation site and exercises of the practical training sessions are now online.

Topics include:

  • Pairwise sequence comparison
  • Multiple sequence alignment
  • Primer search programs
  • Programs that compare a sequence to a database (e.g. FastA. BLAST)
  • Scientific exploitation of molecular biology databases (SRS, GDB, OMIM)
  • Evolutionary analysis of molecular sequence data (Calculation of phylogenetic trees) (on request)
  • Management of hybridisation data (How to design your own database)
  • EST Clustering (How to characterize a new sequence by screening an EST database)
  • Hidden Markov Models
  • Promoter and Gene prediction (How to locate genes in genomic DNA)
  • Functional analysis of proteins (How to obtain information on protein characteristics, structure, motifs, domains)
  • Or any other subject! Suggestions are welcome!

Check the preliminary agenda of the workshop and register via the Mitarbeiterportal.
